Why It Matters
A beam an inch off will not seat. A frame of the wrong depth will not line up. Ten minutes with a tape saves a wasted delivery.
Measuring an Upright
- HeightFloor to the top of the column.
- DepthFront of the front column to back of the back column. Common depths are 36”, 42” and 48”.
- Column sizeFace width and depth, such as 3” × 3”.
- Hole patternTeardrop holes look like an upside-down drop. Take a clear photo with a tape in it.
Measuring a Beam
- LengthThe clear opening between the two uprights, not the full steel length. That is the beam size.
- Face heightFront of the beam, top to bottom.
- StepThe ledge on the inside top edge for decking, if any.
Find the Maker
Look for a name, logo or sticker on the upright or beam end. If none, send two photos: the column face showing the holes, and the beam connector from the side showing the pins.
Count What You Have
Adding on: the bays and levels you want. Selling: uprights, beams and wire decks. Round numbers are fine.
