Can You Mix Pallet Rack Brands? Teardrop Compatibility Explained

The Short Answer

Most teardrop beams fit most teardrop uprights: the hole is a standard shape on 2" centres. But fitting is not rating. Pins that do not match the hole bear less than the capacity assumes. Mixed rack needs an engineer to identify and approve the actual assembly before it carries load.

What Has to Match

  1. Hole pattern. Teardrop fits teardrop. Slotted (Ridg-U-Rak), keystone (Unarco/USP), T-bolt and structural bolted uprights take only their own beams or beams with the matching connector. See the rack styles guide.
  2. Pin spacing and size. Teardrop makers use 2" vertical centres, but pin diameter and connector plate shape vary. Pins must seat fully in the hole's narrow part.
  3. Column face width. Most roll-formed uprights are 3" wide; some are 2 1/2", 3 1/2" or 4" (Interlake Mecalux and others make several). A connector plate wider than the column face is a mismatch.
  4. Beam depth and the safety clip. The clip has to lock in that maker's hole. A rising fork can lift out an unclipped beam.

Makers That Generally Interchange

Interlake, Mecalux, Steel King, Husky, Frazier roll-formed, Kingway, Bulldog and many import teardrop lines often take each other's beams. Fit is not approval. Old-style Speedrack, Sammons, Penco and keystone or T-bolt systems need their own connectors or adapters. Our yard sorts by style and face width.

How to Check in the Yard or on Site

  1. Identify the uprightHole shape, column width and depth, hole count and spacing, bracing pattern, any stamp or label. Compare with the styles guide.
  2. Identify the beamConnector type, pin count and spacing, beam face height, clip type.
  3. Test one bayHang two beams, press down, fit the clips. Pins should seat with no play and the beam should not rock.
  4. Get it approvedA fit test and separate charts do not rate a mixed connection. An engineer approves the identified assembly and sets the plaque numbers.
  5. Mind the rowBays in a row share frames, so mixing brands in a row is still a mix. It needs the same approval.

The Insurance and Permit Angle

Reviewers ask for installed capacity. One maker: the maker's chart. Mixed rack: an engineer's letter on the identified parts, which we provide with engineering and permitting.

Buying Used? Ask Three Questions

  1. What make and style is it, and does it match what I have?
  2. What is the beam rated at in this upright?
  3. Are the clips included, and do they lock?

If the seller cannot answer, walk away. Our used racking is sorted, identified and rated before listing.
